Most Likely to Succeed Video thoughts:
- With the introduction of technology and computers in our every day lives; why doesn’t school reflect this change? I remember teachers in elementary school saying we needed to learn how to write in cursive because when we went off to University, all papers were going to be written in cursive writing. In my entire time at University I have never hand written a paper. Why? Well because we type them out on computers now (Yikes, could you imagine writing a 10 page paper by hand). Even handing a paper/assignment in is no longer printed, but handed in electronically. That changed during the time I was in University. I remember my first two years in post-secondary we would have to hand in a printed copy of the assignment. Now we hand it in electronically.
- Committee of 10 (1890) who created the education model (the day is organized by subjects) . And this structure has continued to this day.
- Education is still producing students based on a small set of skills, that are not enough in our technology based society. Thus why doesn’t education reflect the boom in technology?
- Larry Rosenstock : Founder of High Tech High – reminds me Of Alexander Neil’s Summerhill school, where students learn based on their interests.
- High tech High: the students who were asked to re arrange the room in a Socratic style. They were told what the end goal was, but not how to accomplish the goal. Thus the students stood around aimlessly doing nothing, and looking at one another. I found it quite funny when the teacher had to tell them to move the tables and chairs in order to achieve a Socratic style. This showed how students were use to being “micro-managed” by teachers, thus they don’t know how to accomplish something without being talked through the whole process.
- Teaching students how to work collaboratively instead of having them work individually.
- Why GPA does not reflect the actual individual, interviews with the founder of Khan Academy and VP of People Operations at Google- Just because someone did well in a course (or high GPA) does not mean they will work well with others, work collaboratively, creative, empathetic and give and receive feedback.
- Ultimate thoughts with no answers: What is the goal of education? Preparing them for society, through skills? Allowing them to discover themselves and develop their identity? What kind of teacher do I want to be? What am I going to do for my future students?

- Things to consider: where is the data hosted? FreshGrade stays in Canada, same with Microsoft. But Google is in the US.
